Gordon was born and raised on Hornby Island, he has no formal arts training, and has been creating sculptures for a dozen years.
While his sculptures are made with paper mache one would never know it looking at their finely burnished finish. And thanks to the abstract (fluid) nature of his sculptures they suggest but are never quite birds, fish, plants or people. And they are never just sitting still either, each sculpture is doing something – reaching, leaping, dancing, posturing – anything but just sitting there.
To appreciate a Gordon sculpture, the question to ask is not, “What is it?”, but, “What is it doing?”
Some sculptures, like The Rancher, tell a story: of being firmly connected to the earth and constantly adjusting to nature. I call these biographical sculptures.
And to be clear none of these sculptures is what it first appears to be from the front. The back side is usually the more interesting view and the side views are seldom the same. Asymmetry is the order of the day, as is defying gravity or otherwise hinting at a state of imbalance or movement.
Come on down to the gallery and see some in person.
Saludos, Gordon
